Effects of Foot Reflexology in children with ADD and / or ADHD and school failure
Evidence: Improving ADHD Rating Scale.
Dr. J. Manzanares Corominas
This study evaluates the effects of Reflexology (RP) in a sample of children with school failure, diagnosed with ADD and / or ADHD. Forty-two children diagnosed with ADD were divided into two groups:
- Group 1. Reflexology Control group: 20 children received treatment as Foot reflexology massage to stimulate reflex areas of pelvic organs.
- Group 2. Reflexology group: 22 children received reflexology stimulation of reflex areas of dominant frontal cortex, parietal cortex and left temporal cortex.
The variables to be tested were the results of the ADHD Rating Scale. We estimated the changes pre-and post-10 massage sessions performed at the clinic, plus 15 sessions in their home performed by a parent from Monday to Friday for 5 weeks. The study lasted for 2 years from 2008 to 2010.
In any statistical study comparing the effectiveness of reflexology has to take into account the skin-to-skin contact factor could be an important mediating mechanism in the therapeutic effects of massage therapies in general the effect can cause neuro-biochemical changes, such as the release of oxytocin.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the neurological-cognitive response of children with ADD and / or ADHD to treatment with reflexology.
Statistically significant changes occur in group 2 compared with group 1 (control group). To emphasize that the response is not simply a result of skin-to-skin contact, nor the mere fact of massaging the foot. It is necessary to stimulate a specific area of the foot to obtain changes in the various tests to obtain a statistically significant score.
